Diagnosing Hair Loss Causes

Losing one’s hair is not a thing you can ignore. It tends to stare you in the face every time you look in the mirror.

The good news is not all hair loss is permanent. There are a host of conditions that can cause it. The key is figuring out what the underlying cause is and what can be done to combat it. This means you need a diagnosis by a medical professional. There are five main tests that are used to make the determination.

The first test is very simple. The medical professional will take a family history and then do a visual examination. This simple approach is also the one that most commonly identifies the problem. Signs of hairs broken off half way up, rashes and w

hat have you can be easily identifiable and action plans can be drawn up to deal with them.

If an examination doesn’t do the trick, the first actual test is a hair pull. No, they aren’t trying to hurt you and there really isn’t any pain. The pull test simply involves grabbing the hair and giving it a bit of a tug. This test is used to see the strength of the follicles, shed rate and to specifically rule out a condition known as telogen effluvium. It results in hair loss when you become overly stressed or emotional.

The next most common problem with hair loss is an infection or underlying scalp problem. Given this, the next test should probably be pretty obvious. The scalp is lightly scraped and samples are analyzed for infections, bacteria and what have you. If there is a problem, antibiotics and medications are prescribed.

If no problem is apparent at this point, the doctor will look to underlying medical reasons. This usually means taking blood for analysis. There are health issues unrelated to your head per se that can cause hair loss. They include things like thyroid disease and diabetes to mention only two. Dealing with the underlying health issue often resolves the hair loss problem.

Nobody likes to lose their hair. That being said, testing is really the only way to know if it is a natural process or something that you can resolve through treatment.
