Causes of hair loss in women can be narrowed down into three main categories; hereditary, hormone swings or imbalances, and serious health issues.
Heredity
Heredity is the primary factor in determining whether a woman or man will encounter a thinning of the crown. Nearly 85 million Americans are faced with some amount of balding on their scalp. For women, 1 in 4 will encounter a reduction of their hair due to their genetic make up.
While men generally have a distinct receding hairline, women tend to experience a thinning throughout the front and top of the scalp without distinct lines.
The good news is that hereditary hair loss is treatable with an FDA approved medication called minoxidil. This is the only medication approved by the FDA for women.
